Baxter cuts annual profit forecast after hurricane disrupts IV facility
Updates shares, adds details throughout
Nov 8 (Reuters) -Baxter International BAX.N cut itsannual profit forecast on Friday, citing hurricane-related disruptions at its North Carolina intravenous solutionsfacility, causing its shares to fall 1.3% in premarket trading.
The company has been trying to reinstate production at the plant, which makes 60% of the United States' supply of IV fluids and some key dialysis solutions, after it was closed in late September due to flooding during HurricaneHelene.
A shortage of IV saline fluids triggered by the hit to production is forcing hospitals to defer elective procedures and could hurt companies that make related medical devices, according to analysts.
Deerfield, Illinois-based Baxtersaid last month it had restarted the highest-throughput IV solutions manufacturing line at the facility, but did not provide a timeline for when production would be fully restored to pre-hurricane levels.
As a result of the hurricane, it expectstotal company fourth-quarter sales to be negatively impacted by about $200 million and annual adjusted profit by between 15 cents and 20 cents per share.
The company now expectsfull-year adjusted profit between $2.90 and $2.94 per share, compared with its previous expectation of $2.93 to $3.01 per share. Analysts were expecting a profit of $2.95 per share.
Baxter said the costs associated with the separation of its kidney care unit, Vantive,acquired by Carlyle Group CG.O in August, are expected to be fully offset by 2027.
It beat Wall Street estimates for third-quarter profit, helped by strong sales at its medical products and therapies unit, which sells IV solutions and nutrition therapies.
The unit brought in sales of $1.34 billion in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up 7% from a year earlier.
On an adjusted basis, the company earned 80 cents per share, compared with an estimate of 78 cents per share, according to estimates compiled by LSEG.
