US Cash Grains-Corn, soy basis mostly steady to firm as rains cross Corn Belt
CHICAGO, Oct 30 (Reuters) -Basis bids for corn and soybeans were mostly steady to stronger in the U.S. Midwest on Wednesday as the harvest of both crops wound down and farmer selling thinned, merchandisers said.
* Farmers in some areas were scrambling to finish harvesting ahead of showers crossing Kansas through southwest Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon. After weeks of mostly dry weather that kept combines rolling with few interruptions, forecasters predicted an active pattern of showers continuing through the middle of next week.
* The corn basis firmed by 5 cents a bushel at Blair, Nebraska, site of a large processing plant, and by 2 to 6 cents a bushel at elevators along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers where grain is loaded onto barges for shipment toward Gulf exporters.
* Falling costs for barge freight helped support grain bids at river elevators. Spot barges on the Illinois River were offered on Wednesday at 825% of tariff, down 100 percentage points from Monday. BG/US
* Soybean basis bids were mixed, with the basis firming by 5 cents a bushel at Morris, Illinois, on the Illinois River, and at a Council Bluffs, Iowa, elevator. But the basis fell by a nickel at a Lafayette, Indiana, soybean-crushing plant after rising by 15 cents at the same location a day earlier.
* On the Chicago Board of Trade, December corn futures CZ24 settled down 2-1/4 cents at $4.11-1/2 a bushel, while benchmark January soybeans SF25 ended up 12-1/4 cents at $9.91-1/4 a bushel. GRA/
* Some locations were rolling their spot soybean basis to the CBOT January SF25 futures contract as the November contract SX24 neared its Nov. 14 expiration.
* The U.S. Energy Information Administration said weekly production ET-OUT-T-EIA of corn-based ethanol inched higher in the latest week to 1.082 million barrels per day, a two-month high, while ethanol stocks fell to 21.771 million barrels, the lowest in roughly 11 months. EIA/S
