US recap: Euro ends October on a high note
Oct 31 (Reuters) -Haven currencies gained against the dollar amid a slump in U.S. tech shares and month-end flows while U.K. budget concerns weighed on the pound.
The dollar index was up marginally and front-end Treasury yields firmed after an unexpected drop in weekly jobless claims, an increase in U.S. consumer spending in September and above-forecast annualized core PCE inflation.
The euro was on pace to close higher for a fourth day after a report that inflation rose to an above-forecast annual rate of 2.0% in the euro zone in October. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde told a French newspaper that inflation will durably reach the 2% target in the course of 2025.
The European Central Bank must avoid the risk of cutting interest rates too slowly and lowering inflation excessively, Governing Council Member Fabio Panetta said on Thursday.
The pound sagged and UK yields rose amid concerns about growth projections in U.K. finance minister Rachel Reeves' recently released budget.
Swiss Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter said some firms in export-oriented industries are concerned about how the appreciation of the Swiss franc affects their business.
The yen held broad gains after the Bank of Japan maintained its ultra-low interest rates while signaling that conditions are falling into place to raise interest rates again.
Front-end Treasury yields were up 1 to 2 basis points as the curve flattened. The 2s-10s curve dipped 1 basis point to +11.1bp.
The S&P 500 slid 1.6% due to weakness in tech and consumer discretionary shares.
Oil prices gained 1% as investors priced in stronger U.S. fuel demand and a potential delay in an OPEC+ output increase in December.
Gold fell 1.61% as prices consolidated at month-end after hitting a record high.
Copper dipped 0.25% amid uncertainty about further economic stimulus in China.
Heading toward the close: EUR/USD +0.13%, USD/JPY -0.91%, GBP/USD -0.72%, AUD/USD -0.03%, DXY +0.01%, EUR/JPY -0.79%, GBP/JPY -1.61%, AUD/JPY -0.98%.
